McDonnell Douglas MD-80 series
The MD-80 series began as a stretched DC-9 and first flew on October 18, 1979, under the name DC-9 Super 80. It kept the DC-9's layout, with two Pratt & Whitney JT8D turbofans on the rear fuselage and a T-tail, but was much longer, at 147 ft 10 in, with a 107 ft 10 in wingspan. The FAA certified it in August 1980, and it entered airline service three months later. Douglas built the MD-81, MD-82, MD-83, MD-87 and MD-88 at Long Beach, California, and delivered 1,191 MD-80s between 1980 and 1999.
