United Airlines Fare Classes: What Every Booking Code Means
Type the fare class letter from your United ticket to see its cabin, what it earns and what it costs to upgrade, as published on united.com.
United fare classes
Most United tickets earn miles per dollar, not by fare class (see How MileagePlus miles are earned). The Miles % column applies only to specialty tickets: unpublished, bulk, group, tour and opaque tickets, which earn a share of the flight distance set by the fare class. On J, C, D, Z and P that is 100% plus a 50% fare class bonus. The Polaris column is the PlusPoints price to request an upgrade to United Polaris business on a long-haul flight.

Calculate what this ticket earnsHow MileagePlus miles are earned
Tickets issued by United (ticket numbers starting 016) earn miles per $1 of fare: the base fare plus carrier-imposed surcharges, not government-imposed taxes and fees. The rate depends on your Premier status on the date of travel, whether you are an eligible primary United Cardmember, and the fare. These rates apply to tickets issued on or after April 2, 2026.
| Miles per $1 (MileagePlus / Cardmember) | Standard fares | Basic Economy and base options |
|---|---|---|
| General member | 3 / 6 | None / 3 |
| Premier Silver | 5 / 8 | 2 / 5 |
| Premier Gold | 6 / 9 | 3 / 6 |
| Premier Platinum | 7 / 10 | 4 / 7 |
| Premier 1K | 9 / 12 | 6 / 9 |
Paying with your United card earns more on standard tickets:
| Miles per $1 | Debit Rewards | Gateway | Explorer | Quest | Club |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| General member | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 11 |
| Premier Silver | 9 | 10 | 11 | 12 | 13 |
| Premier Gold | 10 | 11 | 12 | 13 | 14 |
| Premier Platinum | 11 | 12 | 13 | 14 | 15 |
| Premier 1K | 13 | 14 | 15 | 16 | 17 |
- Cap: up to 75,000 miles per ticket, not counting promotions.
- Basic Economy and base options include Basic Economy, JetBlue Blue Basic, and the base option of United Premium Plus, United First, United Business and United Polaris.
- Debit Rewards and Gateway Cardmembers must spend $10,000 on the card in a calendar year to unlock the Cardmember rates.
- Only the primary Cardmember earns at the Cardmember rate, not authorized users. Each traveler earns on their own status, not the status of the person who paid.
- Before April 2, 2026, tickets also earned per dollar: 5 miles per $1 plus a Premier bonus, for 5 (general member), 7 (Silver), 8 (Gold), 9 (Platinum) or 11 (1K) in all.
- Star Alliance tickets issued by partner airlines earn by flight distance and fare class, on each partner's own chart.
Premier status: PQP and PQF
You qualify in a calendar year with Premier qualifying points (PQP) and Premier qualifying flights (PQF), or with a higher PQP total alone. Every level also needs at least 4 flights on United or United Express.
| Status | PQF and PQP | PQP only |
|---|---|---|
| Premier Silver | 15 PQF + 5,000 PQP | 6,000 |
| Premier Gold | 30 PQF + 10,000 PQP | 12,000 |
| Premier Platinum | 45 PQF + 15,000 PQP | 18,000 |
| Premier 1K | 60 PQF + 22,000 PQP | 28,000 |
- PQP on United and United Express: 1 per $1 of base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges. Taxes and other fees do not earn PQP. PQP goes to the traveler, not the buyer.
- PQF: 1 per flight on United, United Express and partner airlines. Basic Economy tickets earn no PQF.
- Award flights: 1 PQP per 100 miles redeemed on United and United Express flights.
- Partner airlines: 1 PQP per 5 award miles on preferred partners (up to 750 in Economy and Premium Economy, 1,500 in First and Business) and 1 per 6 on other MileagePlus partners (up to 500 and 1,000 per flight).
- Economy Plus and preferred seats bought on United flights earn 1 PQP per $1, excluding taxes and fees.
Upgrades
PlusPoints are for Premier Platinum and 1K members: 40 on reaching Platinum, 280 more on reaching 1K, and 20 more for every 3,000 PQP beyond 22,000. They are deducted only when an upgrade is confirmed.
| PlusPoints | Upgrade request |
|---|---|
| 10 | United Premium Plus to United Business, short-haul |
| 20 | United Economy to United First or United Business, short-haul; United Economy to United Premium Plus, short- or long-haul |
| 30 | United Premium Plus to United Polaris, long-haul |
| 40 | United Economy (Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V, W) to United Polaris, long-haul |
| 80 | United Economy (S, T, L, K, G) to United Polaris, long-haul |
- From Feb. 1, 2027 United will retire this fixed chart for a dynamic one. Until then, select transcontinental and Hawaii flights stay at 20 PlusPoints to United Polaris.
- Not eligible for PlusPoints: Basic Economy and Economy (first bag charge/no changes allowed) fares, industry discount fares, opaque tickets and flights already upgraded. United's PlusPoints terms also exclude award tickets, but its What's new page says PlusPoints and Complimentary Premier Upgrades can be used on award tickets from Feb. 1, 2026.
- Skip Waitlist (Premier 1K, select international flights, more than 30 days out) confirms an upgrade at once: Premium Plus to Polaris from O, A or R; Economy to Polaris from Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V or W; Economy to Premium Plus from Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V, W, S, T, L or K.
- Complimentary Premier Upgrades are single-cabin upgrades on select flights, such as within the mainland U.S. They start clearing 96 hours before departure for 1K, 72 for Platinum, 48 for Gold and on the day of departure for Silver. Not on Basic Economy or Economy (first bag charge/no changes allowed) fares.
- Waitlist order: United Global Services, then PlusPoints and MileagePlus Upgrade Awards, Premier members, then fare class. On flights with United Premium Plus, requests to United Business from Premium Plus fares (O, A, R) are processed before requests from Economy.
- Since Aug. 21, 2025 United no longer gives instant upgrades at ticketing on Y, B or M fares.
Basic Economy (N)
- Miles: the lower Basic Economy rates in the earning table. General members without an eligible United card earn none.
- Premier status: full PQP, no PQF.
- Upgrades: none. No paid, mileage, Complimentary Premier or PlusPoints upgrades, and no complimentary Economy Plus for Premier members.
- Changes: the only way to change is to cancel and book again. Cancel within 24 hours of buying for a full refund; after that you get a partial travel credit.
- Adding United Economy benefits after booking earns PQF on the flights it is added to.
Good to know
- Does my United fare class decide how many miles I earn?
- On most tickets, no. Tickets issued by United earn miles per $1 of fare, set by your Premier status, whether you are an eligible primary United Cardmember, and whether you bought a standard fare or a Basic Economy fare or base option. The letter decides earning only on specialty tickets, such as unpublished, bulk, group, tour and opaque fares, which earn a share of flight distance by fare class. It also sets the price of a PlusPoints upgrade to United Polaris.
- What changed on April 2, 2026?
- The earn rates. For tickets issued on or after April 2, 2026, a general member earns 3 miles per $1, or 6 as a Cardmember, and Basic Economy earns less: nothing for general members without an eligible United card. Tickets issued before that date earned 5 miles per $1 plus a Premier bonus. Either way, miles are counted per dollar of fare, not by distance.
- Does Basic Economy count toward Premier status?
- Partly. United says Basic Economy earns full Premier qualifying points (PQP) but no Premier qualifying flights (PQF).
- Which fare classes can be upgraded to United Polaris with PlusPoints?
- From United Economy on a long-haul flight, Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V and W cost 40 PlusPoints, and S, T, L, K and G cost 80. From United Premium Plus (O, A or R) it costs 30. Basic Economy cannot be upgraded with PlusPoints or any other upgrade. United plans to replace the fixed PlusPoints chart with dynamic pricing for travel on or after Feb. 1, 2027.
- Where do I find my fare class?
- On united.com the flight details show it in brackets after the cabin name, for example United Economy (N).
- What about codes like I, X, PZ or RN?
- Those are award and upgrade inventory codes. United does not describe them on united.com, so this page leaves them out.
