Fare codes are the single letter on your ticket, and the same letter means different things at different airlines. A Y is full fare economy nearly everywhere, but past that the letters diverge: what earns a systemwide upgrade at one carrier may be a non-changeable discount fare at the next.
How to Use This
- Booking across two airlines? A codeshare or partner itinerary can put you in one letter on the ticket and a different one in the operating carrier's system. Comparing the two tells you which set of rules is likely to apply to changes and upgrades.
- Weighing a switch. Put your usual airline's fare next to the equivalent letter on the carrier you are considering and compare what each one earns.
- Reading an award or upgrade rule. Airline fine print is written in fare letters. Look up the letter here to see what the carrier says it is.
- Every detail comes from our own fare charts, so whatever is current on the American, Alaska, Delta, Southwest, and United pages is what you see here.
- JetBlue and Hawaiian are not listed. JetBlue publishes fare products such as Blue Basic and Blue Plus rather than fare letters, and Hawaiian now follows Alaska's Atmos Rewards structure. See the JetBlue and Hawaiian pages for those.
