Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II
The F-35A is the conventional takeoff and landing version, the Air Force's newest fighter and the replacement for its F-16s and A-10s. One pilot flies it. A single Pratt and Whitney F135-PW-100 turbofan gives about 40,000 pounds of thrust with afterburner, and the jet reaches Mach 1.6 and can take 9 g. Lockheed Martin quotes more than 1,200 nautical miles of range and a combat radius above 590 nautical miles on internal fuel, with an 18,000-pound weapons payload. The Air Force sheet gives a ceiling above 50,000 feet. ICAO files all three F-35 versions under F35.
