Grumman F-14 Tomcat

The F-14 Tomcat was the Navy's carrier-based interceptor and air superiority fighter, a twin-engine, two-seat jet with a variable-sweep wing and twin tails. It came out of a failed attempt at standardization: when a Navy version of the Air Force's F-111 could not meet the carrier requirements, the Navy ran a new design competition, and Grumman won it. Deliveries to the Navy began in June 1972. The F-14D, with new General Electric F110 engines, was the last version, and the Navy has retired the type.
