This chart shows every American Airlines fare class (booking code) and what each one means for earning AAdvantage miles, upgrades, and status qualification. Use it to understand exactly what your ticket gets you.
How AAdvantage Miles Are Earned
American Airlines calculates miles based on fare paid (before taxes and fees). All non-Basic Economy fares earn 5 base miles per dollar, plus a status bonus percentage on top.

How to Read This Chart
- Fare: The booking code on your ticket (e.g., Y, B, M, O).
- Cabin: The cabin of service (Coach, Premium Economy, Business, First).
- Upgrades: Shows upgrade eligibility and whether complimentary or instrument-based upgrades apply.
- Basic Economy (fare class B): Does not earn miles or Loyalty Points (tickets purchased after Dec 17, 2025).

*AA Elite members can upgrade only. AAdvantage Executive Platinum members receive complimentary upgrades on any eligible purchased published fare. AAdvantage Platinum Pro, Platinum, and Gold members receive complimentary upgrades when buying full-fare economy class tickets (booked in Y).
AAdvantage Mileage Earning
All AAdvantage members earn 5 miles per dollar spent on American Airlines flights (based on ticket price, excluding taxes and fees). Status members earn bonus miles:
- Executive Platinum: 11x miles per dollar
- Platinum Pro: 9x miles per dollar
- Platinum: 8x miles per dollar
- Gold: 7x miles per dollar
- General Member: 5x miles per dollar
In addition to revenue-based miles, fare classes also earn Base Miles (a percentage of distance flown) and may earn a Cabin Bonus:
- First (F, A): 100% base + 100% cabin bonus
- Business (J): 100% base + 100% cabin bonus
- Business (C, D): 100% base + 75% cabin bonus
- Business (R): 100% base + 50% cabin bonus
- Premium Economy (W, P): 100% base, no cabin bonus
- Economy (Y, H, K): 100% base, no cabin bonus
- Economy (M, L): 75% base
- Economy (V, G, S, N): 50% base
- Economy (Q, O): 25% base
- Basic Economy (B): 0% — no miles earned

Good to Know
- Miles are earned on the ticket price excluding government-imposed taxes and fees.
- Basic Economy fares purchased on or after December 17, 2025 do not earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points.
- Status bonus miles are calculated as a percentage of base miles. Executive Platinum earns 5 base + 120% bonus = 11 total miles per dollar.
- Citi AAdvantage card bonuses stack on top of base + status miles. An Executive Platinum with an Executive Card earns 15 mi/$.
- Loyalty Points are earned 1:1 with all eligible AAdvantage miles, including status bonus and card bonus miles.
- Upgrades, seat purchases, and bag fees do not earn additional miles.
